Racines de combat<\/h3>\n

Johnny Munoz Jr. est n\u00e9 le 16 f\u00e9vrier 1993 \u00e0 Corona, en Californie, dans une famille o\u00f9 le jiu-jitsu bresilien n’est pas un loisir mais un mode de vie. Ses parents ont fond\u00e9 la salle C-Quence Jiu-Jitsu \u00e0 Norco, et c’est l\u00e0 qu’il pose ses genoux sur un tatami d\u00e8s l’\u00e2ge de 5 ans. \u00c0 20 ans, il obtient sa ceinture noire en BJJ \u2014 multiple champion IBJJF au passage. Le surnom \u00ab\u00a0Kid Kvenbo\u00a0\u00bb ? Il le tient de son p\u00e8re. Une histoire de transmission autant que de bagarre.<\/p>\n

Ce que peu de combattants affichent dans leurs stats : Munoz Jr. a d\u00e9croch\u00e9 un master en sant\u00e9 publique \u00e0 Cal State San Bernardino en 2020, la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e o\u00f9 il faisait ses d\u00e9buts \u00e0 l’UFC. L’homme a manifestement deux vitesses.<\/p>\n

La mont\u00e9e \u2014 King of the Cage et 9-0<\/h3>\n

Il d\u00e9bute en professionnel le 29 ao\u00fbt 2015 contre Jesus Rivas, soumission au premier round sous la banni\u00e8re KOTC. La suite est lin\u00e9aire : 9 combats, 9 victoires, z\u00e9ro d\u00e9faite. En 2019, il d\u00e9croche la ceinture KOTC des poids coqs. Son taux de finishs tourne autour de 75 % \u2014 2 KO, 7 soumissions \u2014 et il n’a jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 soumis de sa carri\u00e8re.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 l’UFC : du bon et du moins bon<\/h3>\n

Le saut vers l’UFC se fait le 1er ao\u00fbt 2020 \u00e0 l’UFC Fight Night Brunson vs. Shahbazyan. Face \u00e0 Nate Maness, il perd aux points, d\u00e9cision unanime. L’adaptation prend du temps. Un an plus tard, le 7 ao\u00fbt 2021, il remet les pendules \u00e0 l’heure en soumettant Jamey Simmons via rear naked choke au second round.<\/p>\n

Le combat contre Tony Gravely en juin 2022 tourne court : KO au premier round, \u00e0 1 min 08. C’est la seule fois qu’on l’a arr\u00eat\u00e9 par KO en carri\u00e8re. Il rebondit quatre mois plus tard, le 6 novembre 2022, en battant Liudvik Sholinian aux points sur trois rounds. Mais les deux derni\u00e8res sorties en octogone \u2014 d\u00e9faite aux points contre Daniel Santos (juin 2023) puis contre Aoriqileng (octobre 2023) \u2014 lui co\u00fbtent sa place au roster. En d\u00e9cembre 2023, l’UFC ne renouvelle pas son contrat. Record final \u00e0 l’UFC : 2 victoires, 4 d\u00e9faites.<\/p>\n

Style et profil technique<\/h3>\n

Munoz Jr. est avant tout un sp\u00e9cialiste de la soumission avec une base BJJ de haut niveau. 7 de ses 15 victoires professionnelles passent par l\u00e0 \u2014 RNC, heel hook, armbar. Il a du punch (2 KO \u00e0 son actif) mais c’est au sol qu’il cherche \u00e0 finir les combats. L’adversaire qui veut rester debout a int\u00e9r\u00eat \u00e0 ne pas s’endormir : Munoz est patient, il attend l’occasion de plonger sur une prise.<\/p>\n

O\u00f9 en est-il ?<\/h3>\n

Lib\u00e9r\u00e9 par l’UFC fin 2023 avec un bilan global de 15 victoires et 4 d\u00e9faites, \u00ab\u00a0Kid Kvenbo\u00a0\u00bb reste un combattant cr\u00e9dible en bantamweight. \u00c0 33 ans, le niveau r\u00e9gional ou les organisations secondaires pourraient lui offrir une porte de retour. L’histoire n’est probablement pas finie.<\/p>\n
